Monday, 8 May 2006 was a memorable occasion at Ambulance Headquarters when the Chairman, Chief Executive, Directors and former colleagues of the late Alister Barr, Emergency Medical Technician, Ballymoney, welcomed his son Mr Dean Barr, his wife and two children to Ambulance Headquarters. The event was to remember the ultimate sacrifice Alister paid with his life on 9 September 1995, during a rescue mission in which two men were trapped down a well in the Ballymoney area. Mr Doug Smyth, Chairman gave an overview of the sad circumstances and Mr Brian McNeill, Director of Operations presented a touching tribute to the life and times of Alister, who was an experienced, well known, popular member of staff. The Director of Operations stated:

“Ask any one of his colleagues to sum up Alister in a few words and you would hear things such as “He was a great character and you would never hear him say a bad word about anyone” And do you know what in all the conversations over the last 10 years I have never heard anyone say a bad word about him. I am delighted that this lecture theatre is being named in his honour and I hope that those who pass through its doors and read the plaque on the wall will leave touched with the kindness love and generosity that Alister showed during his life. For he certainly gave and did not count the cost.” This was followed by the unveiling of an attractively designed plaque dedicating a lecture room to his memory.
